For you know very well that the day of the Lord will come like a thief in the night…But you, brothers and sisters, are not in darkness so that this day should surprise you like a thief. You are all children of the light and children of the day. We do not belong to the night or to the darkness. 1 Thessalonians 5:2,4–5
God of Salvation, Almighty and Eternal Father, you have set the rule of creation with perfect precision to follow your plans. Only rebellious mankind, created in your image, has gone wayward and need your saving grace. You have redeemed penitent mankind and taught them by enlightening your people in the Truth, instructing them in your Ways and giving the Light of eternal Life to those of us who walk in the paths of righteousness, with faith in your Word, doctrines and steadfast Promises.
We watch and wait for your coming Lord, which has been predestined and of which you have spoken when you lived, as our prophesied Messiah among us. But the knowledge of that day and hour lies with God alone, and has not been imparted to mortal minds. We are exhorted to live in hope, in trust, in unshaken faith and in perpetual and perfect readiness.
Just as a thief catches a household by surprise, our Redeemer Jesus, will catch the unbelieving world by surprise when He returns in judgment. There will be great trepidation as to that day, which will spring upon us unexpectedly and without prior warning. As believers in your Word, we tread the path of Truth and Light and will not encounter the wrath of God, the full impact of which will fall only on those in darkness, the unbelievers, who will be taken unawares,
The unsaved should heed the warning of the Lord, but we are blessed to belong to the throng of believing Christians, abiding in him as members of his mystical Body. We know that Jesus, as our Lord and Savior, lives in us, as do we in him. He has brought us salvation, granted forgiveness of our sins, with the promise of everlasting life in your glorifying Presence. May we cherish our gift of eternal life by warding off temptation and abiding in Christ forevermore. Amen
