Psalm 85: 8-9

14 October, 2020

I will listen to what God the Lord says; he promises peace to his people, his faithful servants – but let them not turn to folly. Surely his salvation is near those who fear him, that his glory may dwell in our land. Psalm 85:8–9

O God, nations are exhilarated at being under your favor and so are we individuals, who crave for your love, mercy and especially your grace and peace, in these present times which has left us confounded and which threatens to confine us to limitations that challenge our very existence.

We remember your promises, God, and the fact that you have forgiven our several atrocities more times than we can remember, and more completely than we deserve. The truth of your promises is shown by your Divine Mercy in sending the Redeemer, whose atoning sacrifice appeased you and turned your wrath away from us.

For Jesus’ sake all good things, especially his Holy Spirit, are given to those who ask him. Through Christ, we, as pardoned sinners, become fruitful in good works, and by looking to and trusting in the Saviour’s righteousness, we set our feet in his footprints.

God, your Son and our Savior Jesus Christ reconciled you to us in righteousness. You dispense mercy to those to whom you grant salvation, who renew their faith and suffer afflictions when they commit sin, but return to you with humble prayer, and are forgiven through grace.

Peace is distributed only to those who turn from sin. We yearn for your peace, but fear backsliding and returning to our sinful nature. Sustain us to avoid temptation, especially since eternal salvation is within our grasp if we abort our devious nature. Whatever our difficulties and distresses, Lord God, grant that we keep your honor secure, that glory may dwell in our land, in Jesus’ Name. Amen
