TODAY’S GOSPEL READING
17 AUGUST, 2025
Luke 12:49-53

Jesus said to his disciples: *“I came to bring fire to the earth, and how I wish it were already kindled!

I have a baptism with which to be baptized, and what stress I am under until it is completed! Do you think that I have come to bring peace to the earth? No, I tell you, but rather division!

From now on, five in one household will be divided, three against two and two against three; they will be divided.

Father against son and son against father, mother against daughter and daughter against mother, mother-in-law against her daughter-in-law and daughter-in-law against mother-in-law.

THE GOSPEL OF THE LORD!

REFLECTION

Jesus’ words are striking, for He reveals that following Him will not always lead to earthly peace but to conflict, even within families. The “fire” He brings is the fire of God’s truth and Spirit, which purifies, refines, and transforms. His “baptism” refers to His coming Passion and death, where He will fulfill the mission of salvation. Choosing Christ demands loyalty to Him above all else, and this radical commitment can create tension in relationships where values clash. Yet, the division is not for destruction but for truth and eternal life. The Gospel calls us to courage, faithfulness, and unwavering love for Christ, even when it costs us comfort or approval.

PRAYER

Lord Jesus, You came to set the world ablaze with the fire of Your Spirit. Give me the courage to embrace Your truth, even when it brings misunderstanding or opposition. Help me to love You above all and to stand firm in faith when faced with trials. May my witness, rooted in Your love, draw others to You and bring the true peace that only You can give. Amen
