“Let the little children come to me… for it is to such as these that the kingdom of God belongs.”
— Mark 10:14
Julie’s love for God began at a very young age and was deeply alive. Growing up in France, she had memorized large portions of Scripture and would gather other children to teach them about God. Her faith was not merely learned, it was lived and shared with enthusiasm.
Authentic faith begins as encounter, not information.
“My grace is sufficient for you, for power is made perfect in weakness.”
— 2 Corinthians 12:9
A traumatic event in her youth left Julie partially paralyzed, and over time her condition worsened until she was confined to bed for many years. What seemed like a devastating interruption became a place of deep union with God. She learned to trust Him completely in helplessness.
God’s work often deepens in hidden seasons.
“God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.”
— Psalm 46:1
During the violence and instability of the French Revolution, Julie lived in constant danger because of her faith. She was forced into hiding and moved from place to place to avoid persecution. In this time of chaos, her interior faith grew stronger, and she became a source of courage and spiritual guidance to others.
Darkness in the world invites deeper light in the soul.
“Your Father who sees in secret will reward you.”
— Matthew 6:6
Julie spent about twenty years in obscurity, unable to move freely, offering her suffering to God. Though outwardly inactive, she formed a deep spiritual life, guiding others through correspondence and prayer. These hidden years prepared her for the mission that would later unfold.
Waiting is not wasted time in God’s plan.
Scripture: “Where two or three are gathered in my name, there am I among them.”
— Matthew 18:20
Clarity emerges not in isolation but through prayerful, communal discernment guided by the Spirit. Although Celestine did not personally attend the Council of Ephesus, he played a decisive role in its direction. The council affirmed the true teaching of Christ’s nature and honored Mary as Theotokos, Mother of God, bringing clarity and unity to the Church.
“Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, rejoice.”
— Philippians 4:4
Despite her long suffering, Julie became known for her constant expression of trust: “How good is the good God!” This was not denial of pain, but a profound confidence in God’s love. Her joy radiated to all who encountered her, even in her weakness.
Joy rooted in God transcends circumstances.
“Stand up and walk.”
— Acts 3:6
After years of paralysis, Julie experienced a sudden and complete healing during a mission. Rising from her bed, she was restored not only in body but also sent forth into active service. Her healing became the beginning of a new phase of mission and leadership.
God restores not just to comfort but to mission
“Where two or three are gathered in my name, there am I among them.”
— Matthew 18:20
Together with Françoise Blin de Bourdon, Julie founded the Sisters of Notre Dame, dedicated to the education of poor children and the formation of faith. What was born out of suffering blossomed into a vibrant mission of service, sustained through shared vision and trust in God.
God’s work grows through shared faith.
“Blessed are you when people revile you and persecute you… on my account.”
— Matthew 5:11
Even within the community she founded, Julie experienced misunderstanding and rejection, eventually being asked to leave the original house. With humility and trust, she accepted this painful separation and continued the mission elsewhere, showing deep detachment and surrender.
Detachment includes letting go even of what we have built.
“Be faithful unto death, and I will give you the crown of life.”
— Revelation 2:10
Julie remained steadfast in her mission despite trials, continuing to establish communities and inspire others until her final days. Her life was marked not by dramatic moments alone, but by steady, faithful trust in God’s goodness.
Holiness is sustained trust over a lifetime.
Lord God,who filled St. Julie Billiartwith unshakable trust in Your goodness, teach us to believe especially in sufferingthat You are always at work.
Give us joyful hearts, patient endurance, and the courage to begin again.
May our lives proclaim,in all circumstances:“How good is the good God!”
Amen.
