The lives of Saints Zachariah and Elizabeth teach us that true holiness lies in remaining faithful to God, even when life does not unfold according to our expectations. They were righteous before God, observing His commandments and living blamelessly. Although they were childless and advanced in age, they never abandoned their faith or devotion to the Lord.
Jesus reminds us
“The two of them were righteous in the eyes of God, observing all the commandments and ordinances of the Lord blamelessly.”
—Luke 1:6
Their perseverance reminds us that difficulties and disappointments should never weaken our relationship with God. True faith continues to trust Him even when answers seem delayed.
God’s timing is always perfect, even when His plans seem impossible to understand. Zachariah and Elizabeth had waited many years for a child. When all human possibilities appeared exhausted, God intervened through the Angel Gabriel, announcing that Elizabeth would bear a son who would be called John.
“Do not be afraid, Zachariah, because your prayer has been heard. Your wife Elizabeth will bear you a son, and you shall name him John.”
—Luke 1:13
Despite their advanced age, Elizabeth conceived and gave birth to John the Baptist, the one chosen to prepare the way for Jesus. Their experience teaches us never to lose hope, because God’s promises are fulfilled according to His divine wisdom and timing.
Prayer was an important part of Zachariah and Elizabeth’s lives. Their long years of waiting did not separate them from God. Zachariah was serving as a priest in the Temple, offering incense, when the Angel Gabriel appeared and announced the miraculous blessing awaiting them.
“Your prayer has been heard.”
— Luke 1:13
Their story reminds us that no prayer offered with faith is forgotten by God. Even when we cannot see an immediate response, we must continue praying, believing that God hears every sincere petition and knows what is best for us.
Zachariah initially struggled to believe the angel’s announcement because of their old age. His doubt resulted in his losing the ability to speak until God’s promise was fulfilled. When their son was born, Elizabeth insisted that he be named John, as instructed by the angel. Zachariah confirmed her words by writing on a tablet, “John is his name.
“Immediately his mouth was opened, his tongue freed, and he spoke blessing God.”
— Luke 1:64
Zachariah’s obedience restored his speech, and his first response was to praise the Lord. His experience teaches us to surrender our doubts, accept God’s will and obey His commands with humility.
One of the most beautiful moments in Elizabeth’s life was her encounter with the Blessed Virgin Mary. When Mary visited her after receiving the message of the Annunciation, Elizabeth immediately recognised the extraordinary blessing bestowed upon her young cousin. Filled with the Holy Spirit, she joyfully acknowledged Mary as the mother of her Lord.
“Most blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb!”
— Luke 1:42
Elizabeth’s response teaches us to recognise God’s presence and blessings in the lives of others. Instead of jealousy or comparison, our hearts should be filled with admiration, encouragement and gratitude for the gifts God bestows upon those around us.
Elizabeth welcomed Mary with love, warmth and humility. Her greeting brought encouragement and affirmation to Mary during an extraordinary and challenging period of her life. The unborn John leapt in Elizabeth’s womb at the sound of Mary’s greeting, revealing the joy associated with the presence of the Saviour.
“For at the moment the sound of your greeting reached my ears, the infant in my womb leaped for joy.”
— Luke 1:44
Elizabeth teaches us the importance of making others feel loved, welcomed and valued. Our words and actions should bring comfort, hope and encouragement to those who need them.
After John’s birth, Zachariah’s speech was restored when he confirmed that the child would be named John. Filled with the Holy Spirit, he praised God through the beautiful canticle known as the BENEDICTUS. He proclaimed God’s faithfulness, mercy and promise of salvation through the coming Messiah.
“Blessed be the Lord, the God of Israel, for he has visited and brought redemption to his people.”
— Luke 1:68
Zachariah’s song teaches us that gratitude and praise should be our response to God’s goodness. Even after periods of uncertainty, silence and suffering, we must never forget to thank Him for His countless blessings.
Saints Zachariah and Elizabeth were entrusted with the responsibility of raising John the Baptist, a child chosen for a special mission in God’s divine plan. They faithfully accepted this extraordinary responsibility, knowing that their son was destined to prepare the people for the coming of the Messiah.
“And you, child, will be called prophet of the Most High, for you will go before the Lord to prepare his ways.”
— Luke 1:76
Their lives remind parents that children are precious gifts entrusted to their care. Beyond providing for their material needs, parents must nurture their faith, teach them God’s commandments and guide them towards fulfilling His purpose.
The lives of Saints Zachariah and Elizabeth are a beautiful testimony to the power of hope. Their story began with disappointment and uncertainty but unfolded into extraordinary joy and fulfilment. God transformed their long-awaited desire into a blessing for the entire world through the birth of John the Baptist, the forerunner of Jesus Christ.
“For nothing will be impossible for God.”
— Luke 1:37
Their example encourages us never to surrender to despair. No situation is beyond God’s power, no prayer is beyond His hearing, and no period of waiting is beyond His loving care.
Saints Zachariah and Elizabeth stand before us as shining examples of faithfulness, patience, humility, obedience and unwavering trust in God’s promises. Their lives remind us that God never forgets His children and that His plans are always greater than our expectations.
As we celebrate their feast on 5 November, may we learn to remain steadfast in prayer, trust God’s timing, rejoice in the blessings of others and praise Him in every circumstance. May their example inspire every family to build a home rooted in faith, love, prayer and obedience to God’s holy will.
