TODAY’S GOSPEL READING
5 JANUARY, 2026
Matthew 4:12-17, 23-25
When Jesus heard that John had been arrested,
he withdrew to Galilee.
He left Nazareth and went to live in Capernaum by the sea,
in the region of Zebulun and Naphtali,
that what had been said through Isaiah the prophet
might be fulfilled:
Land of Zebulun and land of Naphtali,
the way to the sea, beyond the Jordan,
Galilee of the Gentiles,
the people who sit in darkness
have seen a great light,
on those dwelling in a land overshadowed by death
light has arisen.
From that time on, Jesus began to preach and say,
“Repent, for the Kingdom of heaven is at hand.”
He went around all of Galilee,
teaching in their synagogues, proclaiming the Gospel of the Kingdom,
and curing every disease and illness among the people.
His fame spread to all of Syria,
and they brought to him all who were sick with various diseases
and racked with pain,
those who were possessed, lunatics, and paralytics,
and he cured them.
And great crowds from Galilee, the Decapolis, Jerusalem, and Judea,
and from beyond the Jordan followed him.
THE GOSPEL OF THE LORD!
REFLECTION
Truly what John the Baptist had spoken about Jesus came true for after he died, Jesus began to preach the Goodnews about the Kingdom and healed many diseases and in this way His light was shown upon those people.
So the news about our King had spread out in the whole country of Syria which was an indication of how great is His love for His people. And on the part of the crowd they brought all those who were sick physically as well as spiritually and where healed for Jesus is the most powerful of all. As a result, many followed Him for they were all amazed of His wonderful miracles and the wisdom He taught that brought transformation in their lives.
Lastly, just as what this Gospel speaks that Jesus is the light and everything was fulfilled when He started His ministry in Galilee and end up sacrificing His life for humanity to be saved, which happened during His passion, death and resurrection.
PRAYER
You have come to rescue us oh God in times of distress and this happened due to our complete trust over you and faith which is bigger than our fears. However, there are times too that we couldn’t hear your voice whispering in our hearts. Hence, just as how John the Baptist had shouted in the desert, this reality
will lead us to pray more and rely on your power for you are in control of everything. Amen
