THE TRUE TREASURE
“You always have the poor with you, and you can show kindness to them whenever you wish.”

When the Roman prefect demanded the Church’s treasures, Lawrence gathered the poor and presented them as the true riches of the Church. He understood that Christ is present in those who are vulnerable, forgotten and in need. His life teaches us that our true wealth is not found in possessions but in love, generosity and compassion. When we serve the poor, we serve Christ Himself.
JOY IN SUFFERING
“For you had compassion on the prisoners, and you joyfully accepted the plundering of your property, knowing that you yourselves possessed something better and more lasting.”

Lawrence faced martyrdom with remarkable courage and serenity. According to ancient tradition, as he suffered on the gridiron, he remained joyful and even spoke with calm humour to his executioners. His courage was rooted not in insensitivity to pain but in his deep trust in Christ. His example reminds us that Christian joy is not the absence of suffering but the presence of God within it.
COURAGE BEFORE POWER
“Do not fear those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul.”

Lawrence refused to be intimidated by the authority of Rome because his loyalty belonged to Christ. Even when threatened with death, he remained faithful to his mission and would not betray the Church or its people. His martyrdom reveals that true courage comes from placing our hope in God rather than in earthly power, security or possessions.
WITNESS THAT CONVERTS
“Let your light so shine before others, that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father in heaven.”

Lawrence’s steadfast witness continued to speak even after his death. His martyrdom strengthened the Christian community and inspired generations of believers to remain faithful to Christ. His life shows that one courageous witness can influence many others. Holiness may begin quietly, but faithful love can become a light that reaches far beyond our own lives.
FAITHFULNESS IN EVERYDAY LIFE
“Whoever is faithful in very little is faithful also in much.”

Lawrence served the Church faithfully as a deacon, caring for its people and distributing its resources to those in need. He did not seek greatness for himself but faithfully carried out the responsibility entrusted to him. His life reminds us that sanctity is not necessarily found in extraordinary achievements, but in faithfully fulfilling our duties with love and seeing Christ in every person we encounter.
PRAYER
Lord Jesus, through the intercession of Saint Lawrence, teach us to recognize You in the poor, the suffering and the forgotten. Give us a generous heart that values people above possessions, courage that remains firm in trials, and joy that springs from trust in You. Help us to remain faithful in small and great things and to become a light of hope to those around us. May the example of Saint Lawrence inspire us to give ourselves lovingly in Your service and to treasure what is eternal. Amen.
