TODAY’S GOSPEL READING
30 AUGUST, 2026
Matthew 16:21-27
From that time on, Jesus began to show his disciples that he must go to Jerusalem and suffer greatly from the elders, the chief priests and the scribes, and be killed and on the third day be raised.
Then Peter took Jesus aside and began to rebuke him, saying, “God forbid, Lord! No such thing shall ever happen to you.”
He turned and said to Peter, “Get behind me, Satan! You are an obstacle to me. You are thinking not as God does, but as human beings do.”
Then Jesus said to his disciples, “Whoever wishes to come after me must deny himself, take up his cross, and follow me. For whoever wishes to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake will find it.
What profit would there be for one to gain the whole world and forfeit his life? Or what can one give in exchange for his life?
For the Son of Man will come with his angels in his Father’s glory, and then he will repay all according to his conduct.”
REFLECTION
Jesus reminds us that discipleship is not a path of comfort and convenience but a journey of surrender, sacrifice and faithful love. When He speaks about His Passion, Peter cannot accept suffering as part of God’s plan. Yet Jesus teaches that God’s ways are higher than human ways.
To take up our cross means to accept our daily responsibilities, difficulties, sacrifices and trials with faith, offering them to God and continuing to follow Christ. The cross is not the end of the story; beyond the suffering lies resurrection and new life.
Jesus also asks us a profound question: “What profit would there be for one to gain the whole world and forfeit his life?” Nothing we possess can compare with the gift of our soul and our relationship with God. True life is found not in gaining everything for ourselves, but in giving ourselves lovingly to God and to others.
PRAYER
Lord Jesus, give me the grace to follow You faithfully, even when the road becomes difficult. Teach me to accept my crosses with patience, courage and trust, knowing that You never abandon me.
Help me to deny myself when selfishness takes control and to choose Your will above my own. May I never become so attached to worldly things that I lose sight of what truly matters.
Lord, strengthen my faith to walk with You beneath the shadow of the cross, trusting that every sacrifice offered in love will lead to the joy of resurrection. May my life belong completely to You. Amen.
