THE STABLE OF BIRTH – GOD DWELLS IN THE LOWLY
“God chose what is weak in the world to shame the strong.”
— 1 Corinthians 1:27
Saint Joseph of Cupertino was born in 1603 into poverty and hardship. His family struggled greatly, and he experienced deprivation from his earliest years. Like Christ, who was born in the poverty of Bethlehem, Joseph’s humble beginnings became the setting in which God’s grace was revealed.
Holiness can grow in places the world considers insignificant. God chooses the lowly so that His glory, rather than human strength, may shine through them. Joseph teaches us that poverty, weakness and limitations can become fertile ground for divine intimacy.
THE GIFT OF HUMILITY – EMBRACING NOTHINGNESS
“My grace is sufficient for you, for power is made perfect in weakness.”
— 2 Corinthians 12:9
Joseph struggled greatly with learning and ordinary tasks. His difficulties brought him repeated humiliation, yet he did not allow them to separate him from God. Instead, they taught him to depend completely upon divine providence. Eventually, his humble perseverance led him into religious life.
His life reveals that accepting our limitations can free us from self reliance. When we acknowledge our nothingness before God, His grace can work through us. Humiliation, when received with faith, can become a doorway to deeper humility and holiness.
THE TRANCE OF PRAYER – BEING LOST IN GOD
“Set your minds on things that are above, not on things that are on earth.”
— Colossians 3:2
Saint Joseph experienced profound ecstasies during prayer and at times was seen to levitate while contemplating God, especially during the celebration of the Eucharist. These extraordinary moments were expressions of his intense love for Christ and his deep union with God.
Joseph’s flights remind us that genuine prayer lifts the heart above worldly distractions. The Eucharist, contemplation and love can draw the soul into heights of communion with God that human effort alone cannot attain.
SILENCE AS MISSION – HIDDEN FRUITFULNESS
“Your Father who sees what is done in secret will reward you.”
— Matthew 6:4
Because people were drawn in large numbers by Joseph’s extraordinary experiences, his superiors sometimes kept him secluded to protect him from curiosity and distraction. Even when hidden from crowds, he continued to pray and intercede for others.
Joseph shows us that fruitfulness is not measured by recognition or visibility. A life quietly surrendered to God can touch many souls. Like Mary at Nazareth, his hiddenness became a mission of prayer, obedience and love.
PROPHECY IN SIMPLICITY – THE SPIRIT SPEAKS THROUGH THE LITTLE ONES
“You have hidden these things from the wise and intelligent and have revealed them to infants.”
— Matthew 11:25
Although Joseph found his studies extremely difficult and struggled to retain what he learned, he was sometimes granted remarkable spiritual insight. He became known for prophetic knowledge and extraordinary signs, not through worldly learning but through his profound openness to God.
His life reflects the mystery of divine wisdom. God does not depend upon human brilliance. When the heart becomes humble and receptive, the Holy Spirit can speak and work through even the simplest person.
UNION AT DEATH – THE FINAL FLIGHT
“Lord Jesus, receive my spirit.”
— Acts 7:59
As Saint Joseph approached death in 1663, he remained deeply united with Jesus and Mary. His entire life of prayer, humility, obedience and surrender had prepared him for his final passage from this world to God.
His death reveals the soul’s ultimate flight: complete surrender into divine love. The greatest ascent is not a bodily movement but the soul being carried beyond itself into the eternal embrace of God.

Saint Joseph of Cupertino shows us how God can transform poverty, weakness, simplicity and human limitations into instruments of grace. His life is a beautiful reminder that the soul, however poor or unworthy it may feel, can rise to extraordinary holiness when it completely surrenders itself to God.
PRAYER
Heavenly Father, through the intercession of Saint Joseph of Cupertino, teach us to accept our weaknesses with humility and to trust completely in Your providence. Help us to remain faithful in prayer, joyful in hiddenness and open to the working of Your Holy Spirit. Lift our hearts above worldly distractions and draw us ever closer to Jesus and Mary. May our whole life become an offering of love, and may our final journey lead us into the eternal embrace of Your presence. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.
