Holy Cross Church, Nirmal is one of the oldest Roman Catholic churches in Vasai, originally built by Portuguese missionaries in 1557. Its altar reflects the classic gold-toned interior typical of old Portuguese churches in the region and stands as a testament to the rich heritage of the area.

The original church was destroyed around 1739 during the Maratha attack on Vasai. For several years, parishioners used the cemetery area for worship. In 1856, the local community rebuilt the church through collective effort and resources. The reconstructed building included a stone bell tower, a raised flight of steps leading to an open patio, and a wooden roof supported by tie beams, reflecting the architectural style of the period.

Today, Holy Cross Church remains an active parish under the Diocese of Vasai, serving as a spiritual and community center for Catholics in Nirmal and neighboring villages. Over the centuries, it has stood not only as a place of worship but also as a symbol of resilience, faith, and community heritage, connecting generations of parishioners in Vasai.
