THE 19th OF FEBRUARY
“Then as he lay and slept under a broom tree, suddenly an angel touched him and said, ‘Arise and eat.’ He looked, and there by his head was a cake baked on coals and a jar of water. So he ate and drank and lay down again. And the angel of the Lord came back a second time, touched him, and said, ‘Arise and eat, because the journey is too great for you.’”
— 1 Kings 19:5-7
After Elijah humbled himself, recognizing that all miracles came from God and not from his own strength, the Lord sent an angel to provide for him, encourage him, and renew his purpose. Though Elijah had failed by fleeing in fear from Jezebel’s threats, God revealed His loving and compassionate heart. Instead of staying to strengthen the faith of the people after they had witnessed God’s power, Elijah ran.
Could God have strengthened Elijah without sleep? Of course—nothing is too difficult for Him. However, God chose to let Elijah rest and recover. Just as with Elijah, God designed our bodies to be restored through sleep and nourishment. A strong body requires rest, food, and hydration. When we are physically refreshed and filled with the Holy Spirit, we are empowered to accomplish whatever God calls us to do.
Heavenly Father, You are a loving and wonderful God! You alone deserve all my praise, glory, and honor. Thank You for calling me Your child and for loving me so deeply. Please help me not to wear myself out doing things You have not called me to do. Teach me to find balance, to rest, and to restore my strength so I can serve You effectively, just as You did with Elijah. You do not require me to be famous or to accomplish grand works—what truly matters to You is a pure heart, obedience, and becoming more like Jesus. Help me to set the right priorities and follow Your guidance, step by step. In Jesus’ Name I humbly pray. Amen
