THE LOVE OF CHRIST MUST BE THE CENTER OF LIFE
“For the love of Christ urges us on.”

Saint Anthony Mary Zaccaria understood that the Christian life begins and ends with a passionate love for Jesus Christ. Though he was a successful physician, he recognized that healing souls was a greater calling than healing bodies. He left behind a promising medical career and dedicated himself entirely to preaching the Gospel, celebrating the Eucharist, and leading people to a deeper relationship with Christ. His life reminds us that every vocation finds its true purpose when centered on the love of Jesus.
THE EUCHARIST IS THE SOURCE OF SPIRITUAL STRENGTH
“I am the living bread that came down from heaven. Whoever eats this bread will live forever.”

Saint Anthony Mary Zaccaria promoted deep devotion to the Holy Eucharist at a time when many had grown spiritually indifferent. He encouraged frequent reception of Holy Communion and inspired greater reverence during Eucharistic worship. He also promoted the ringing of church bells at three o’clock on Fridays so that people would pause and remember Christ’s sacrifice on the Cross. Through his example, he teaches us that strength for holy living flows from the Eucharistic presence of Christ.
HOLINESS REQUIRES CONTINUAL RENEWAL
“Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your minds.”

Believing that the Church must always be renewed through personal conversion, Saint Anthony Mary founded the Clerics Regular of Saint Paul, commonly known as the Barnabites, along with the Angelic Sisters of Saint Paul and a lay association dedicated to Christian renewal. His mission was to rekindle fervor among priests, religious, and laypeople alike. His life reminds us that renewal in the Church always begins with the conversion of individual hearts.
COURAGEOUS PREACHING CHANGES LIVES
“Preach the word; be persistent whether the time is favorable or unfavorable.”
— 2 Timothy 4:2
Saint Anthony Mary preached with remarkable zeal, calling people to repentance, holiness, and charity. His fearless preaching often challenged complacency and inspired many to return to the practice of their faith. Although he encountered misunderstanding and opposition, he remained steadfast because he sought only the glory of God. His example encourages us to proclaim the truth with courage, humility, and love.
CHARITY MUST BE EXPRESSED IN ACTION
“Little children, let us love, not in word or speech, but in truth and action.”
— 1 John 3:18
The saint’s compassion was evident in his service to the poor, the sick, and those neglected by society. Even as a physician, he cared for both the physical and spiritual needs of those entrusted to him. After becoming a priest, he continued to serve generously, teaching that authentic love for God is always reflected in loving service to others. His life reminds us that faith becomes credible when it is lived through acts of mercy.
PERSEVERANCE IN SUFFERING LEADS TO HOLINESS
“Be faithful until death, and I will give you the crown of life.”

Despite his tireless apostolic work, Saint Anthony Mary endured poor health and many hardships. Worn out by constant labor, prayer, and sacrifice, he died at the young age of thirty-six. Before his death, he entrusted everything to God’s providence, leaving behind a flourishing spiritual movement that continued his mission of renewal. His perseverance teaches us that holiness often grows through sacrifice faithfully embraced.
PRAYER
Lord God, through the example of Saint Anthony Mary Zaccaria, teach us to love Christ above all things, cherish the Holy Eucharist, seek continual conversion, proclaim Your Word with courage, serve others with generous charity, and persevere faithfully in every trial. May his life inspire us to become instruments of renewal in our families, our Church, and the world. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen.
