THE BURNING DREAM: WHAT DO I TREASURE?
“Where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.”
— Matthew 6:21
Jerome’s vision, in which he was told that he was more a Ciceronian than a Christian, became a profound examination of his heart. It reminded him that Christian identity must not remain merely outward, but must transform the whole person. His dream became a divine mirror, revealing the need to place God above worldly knowledge, ambition and recognition.
Jerome responded by turning his life more deliberately towards Christ and withdrawing into the desert to seek God. His experience teaches us that God may sometimes allow a painful awakening, not to condemn us, but to redirect our hearts towards eternal truth.
THE DESERT STRUGGLE: THE TEMPTATION WITHIN
“Come away to a deserted place all by yourselves and rest a while.”

In the Syrian desert, Jerome faced not only physical hardship but also the memories, desires and temptations within himself. His years of solitude became a school of purification, prayer and dependence upon God.
Jerome later described his struggles with the temptations that accompanied his solitude. Yet he persevered through prayer, fasting and penance. His life reminds us that our own deserts may be seasons of silence, loneliness or testing in which God teaches us to cling to Him alone.
THE LANGUAGE OF GOD: RETURNING TO THE SOURCE
“Your word is a lamp for my feet and a light for my path.”

Jerome devoted himself to learning Hebrew so that he could understand Sacred Scripture more deeply in its original language. His scholarship was not merely intellectual; it was driven by a desire to encounter God more faithfully through His Word.
He studied Scripture with great dedication and sought guidance from Jewish teachers in order to understand the Hebrew Scriptures accurately. His example calls us beyond a secondhand faith towards a personal encounter with God through Scripture, prayer, silence and the Sacraments.
THE VULGATE: THE WORD MADE ACCESSIBLE
“The word is very near you; it is in your mouth and in your heart.”

Jerome devoted much of his life to translating and revising the Scriptures into the Latin language commonly understood by the people. His work eventually became known as the Vulgate and served the Church for centuries.
Jerome’s desire was to make the Word of God more accessible and faithfully understood. His work reflects the humility of Christ, the eternal Word who came close to humanity. His life teaches us that we too must make Christ accessible through the language of everyday love, patience, compassion and service.
THE FIERY PEN: TRUTH WITH LOVE
“Speaking the truth in love, we must grow up in every way into him who is the head, into Christ.”
— Ephesians 4:15
Jerome possessed a passionate and sometimes forceful personality. His writings against errors and abuses could be severe, yet his zeal arose from a profound love for the truth of the Gospel and the integrity of Christian teaching.
His relationships with holy people such as Saint Paula and Saint Eustochium also reveal his dedication to helping others grow in holiness through Scripture and spiritual guidance. His example reminds us that truth must never become an instrument of pride. Christian zeal must always be purified by humility and charity.
THE RESTLESS HEART: LETTING SCRIPTURE READ US
“For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword.”

Jerome’s journey led him from worldly learning through desert purification into a lifelong love of Sacred Scripture. His entire life demonstrates that the Bible is not merely a book to be studied, but the living Word through which God speaks to the human heart.
His devotion to Scripture invites us to approach the Word with humility, allowing it to reveal our weaknesses, correct our paths, deepen our faith and transform our lives. We are not called merely to read Scripture, but to allow Scripture to read us.
PRAYER
Heavenly Father, through the intercession of Saint Jerome, give us a deep love for Your Holy Word. Purify our hearts from everything that draws us away from You and teach us to seek You above all earthly treasures.
Lord Jesus, help us to receive Scripture with humility, to understand it with wisdom and to live it with love. May Your Word transform our thoughts, words and actions so that our lives may become a faithful reflection of Your Gospel.
Saint Jerome, passionate lover of Sacred Scripture, pray for us that we may never merely read God’s Word, but allow it to change our hearts and lead us ever closer to Christ. Amen.
