TODAY’S GOSPEL READING
1 JUNE, 2025
Luke 24:46-53
Jesus said to his disciples:
“Thus it is written that the Messiah would suffer
and rise from the dead on the third day
and that repentance, for the forgiveness of sins,
would be preached in his name to all the nations,
beginning from Jerusalem.
You are witnesses of these things.
And behold I am sending the promise of my Father upon you;
but stay in the city
until you are clothed with power from on high.”
Then he led them out as far as Bethany,
raised his hands, and blessed them.
As he blessed them he parted from them
and was taken up to heaven.
They did him homage
and then returned to Jerusalem with great joy,
and they were continually in the temple praising God.
THE GOSPEL OF THE LORD!
REFLECTION
In this final passage of Luke’s Gospel, Jesus reminds His disciples that His suffering, death, and resurrection were part of God’s redemptive plan. He commissions them as witnesses to proclaim repentance and forgiveness in His name to all nations. Then, in a moment of divine beauty, He blesses them and ascends into heaven. The disciples, instead of being sorrowful, return to Jerusalem with great joy, continually worshiping God. This marks a transition from the earthly ministry of Jesus to the Spirit-empowered mission of the Church. Their joy came not from Jesus’ physical presence, but from the promise of His ongoing work through them and the coming of the Holy Spirit.
PRAYER
Risen Lord Jesus, You fulfilled the Scriptures and opened our eyes to the wonder of God’s plan. As You ascended to the Father, You left us not in sorrow but with a mission and a promise. Help us to be faithful witnesses of Your love and truth. Fill us with the same joy and worship that filled the hearts of Your disciples. Send Your Spirit to strengthen us as we proclaim repentance and forgiveness in Your name. Let our lives reflect the glory of Your resurrection and the hope of Your return. Amen
