TODAY’S GOSPEL READING
16 JUNE, 2025
Matthew 5:38-42
Jesus said to his disciples:
“You have heard that it was said,
An eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth.
But I say to you, offer no resistance to one who is evil.
When someone strikes you on your right cheek,
turn the other one to him as well.
If anyone wants to go to law with you over your tunic,
hand him your cloak as well.
Should anyone press you into service for one mile,
go with him for two miles.
Give to the one who asks of you,
and do not turn your back on one who wants to borrow.”
THE GOSPEL OF THE LORD!
REFLECTION
In this passage, Jesus teaches a radical new way of responding to wrongs. Instead of seeking revenge or insisting on personal rights, He calls His followers to embody grace, mercy, and generosity. “Turning the other cheek,” “going the extra mile,” and “giving to those who ask” are not signs of weakness, but expressions of divine love and strength. Jesus challenges us to rise above the cycle of retaliation and instead reflect God’s heart of compassion and selflessness. This kind of love transforms hearts and breaks the power of evil with goodness.
PRAYER
Lord Jesus, Your words are challenging and countercultural, yet full of divine wisdom and power. Teach me to let go of bitterness and the desire for revenge. Fill my heart with the courage to love those who wrong me and to give generously without expecting in return. Help me to reflect Your grace and mercy in all my relationships. May I be an instrument of peace and a witness to Your love in a world that often chooses hate. Amen
