TODAY’S GOSPEL READING
17 MAY, 2026
Matthew 28: 16-20

The eleven disciples went to Galilee,
to the mountain to which Jesus had ordered them.
When they all saw him, they worshiped, but they doubted.
Then Jesus approached and said to them,
“All power in heaven and on earth has been given to me.
Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations,
baptizing them in the name of the Father,
and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit,
teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you.
And behold, I am with you always, until the end of the age.”

THE GOSPEL OF THE LORD!

REFLECTION

Matthew 28:16-20 contains the final earthly words of Jesus to His disciples before His Ascension. The disciples gather on the mountain in Galilee, the very place Jesus had appointed. Some worship Him immediately, while others still struggle with doubt. Yet Jesus does not reject them because of their weakness. Instead, He entrusts them with the greatest mission in history.

“All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me.”
Matthew 28:18

Jesus reminds us that He is Lord over every power, every nation, every circumstance, and every human heart. The mission of the Church is not built on human strength but on His divine authority.

“Go therefore and make disciples of all nations.”
Matthew 28:19

Christian life is never meant to remain private or passive. Every believer is called to witness through words, actions, compassion, forgiveness, and faithful living. We may not travel to distant nations, but we can bring Christ into our homes, workplaces, neighborhoods, and daily encounters.

Jesus also commands baptism and teaching. Faith is not merely emotional inspiration; it is a lifelong journey of transformation and obedience. True discipleship means learning to live according to the teachings of Christ every day.

Finally comes one of the most comforting promises in all Scripture:

“And remember, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”
Matthew 28:20

The Lord never sends us alone. In moments of fear, uncertainty, weakness, or discouragement, His presence remains constant. He walks beside us in every duty, every suffering, and every mission entrusted to us.

This Gospel reminds us that the Church continues the mission of Christ in the world today. Though imperfect and sometimes fearful like the first disciples, we are strengthened by His authority and sustained by His abiding presence.

PRAYER

Lord Jesus Christ, You are the risen Lord who holds all authority in heaven and on earth. Thank You for calling us to follow You and to share Your love with the world.

Strengthen us when we are weak and increase our faith when doubts arise. Teach us to live as true disciples who reflect Your truth, mercy, humility, and compassion in daily life.

Help us to bring Your light into our families, communities, and every place we enter. Give us courage to witness to the Gospel not only through words but through actions filled with love and kindness.

Above all, help us to trust Your promise that You are always with us. In every joy and trial, may we remain close to You and faithful to the mission You have given us. Amen
