TODAY’S GOSPEL READING
2 AUGUST, 2025
Matthew 14:1-12
Herod the tetrarch heard of the reputation of Jesus
and said to his servants, “This man is John the Baptist.
He has been raised from the dead;
that is why mighty powers are at work in him.”
Now Herod had arrested John, bound him, and put him in prison
on account of Herodias, the wife of his brother Philip,
for John had said to him,
“It is not lawful for you to have her.”
Although he wanted to kill him, he feared the people,
for they regarded him as a prophet.
But at a birthday celebration for Herod,
the daughter of Herodias performed a dance before the guests
and delighted Herod so much
that he swore to give her whatever she might ask for.
Prompted by her mother, she said,
“Give me here on a platter the head of John the Baptist.”
The king was distressed,
but because of his oaths and the guests who were present,
he ordered that it be given, and he had John beheaded in the prison.
His head was brought in on a platter and given to the girl,
who took it to her mother.
His disciples came and took away the corpse
and buried him; and they went and told Jesus.
THE GOSPEL OF THE LORD!

REFLECTION
This passage recounts the tragic death of John the Baptist, a faithful prophet who boldly stood for truth and righteousness. His unwavering commitment to God’s truth cost him his life at the hands of a corrupt ruler and a vengeful heart. Herod’s fear and guilt also stand out—he recognized John as a righteous man, yet allowed his pride and political weakness to silence him. This reminds us that discipleship often demands courage in the face of injustice, and that speaking truth may bring suffering. Still, God’s purposes prevail even through human wickedness. John’s life and death echo the call to live fearlessly for God, regardless of the cost.
PRAYER
Righteous Father, You called John the Baptist to prepare the way for Your Son and to speak truth with boldness. Teach us to walk in that same courage and integrity, even when it’s difficult or costly. Help us not to compromise in the face of fear or pressure, but to stand firm in Your truth and trust in Your justice. Strengthen our faith to speak with clarity and act with compassion, knowing You are the righteous Judge who sees all. In Jesus’ Name we pray. Amen
