TODAY’S GOSPEL READING
2 JULY, 2026
Matthew 9:1-8
After entering a boat, Jesus made the crossing, and came into his own town.
And there people brought to him a paralytic lying on a stretcher.
When Jesus saw their faith, he said to the paralytic,
“Courage, child, your sins are forgiven.”
At that, some of the scribes said to themselves,
“This man is blaspheming.”
Jesus knew what they were thinking, and said,
“Why do you harbor evil thoughts?
Which is easier, to say, ‘Your sins are forgiven,’
or to say, ‘Rise and walk’?
But that you may know that the Son of Man
has authority on earth to forgive sins”–
he then said to the paralytic,
“Rise, pick up your stretcher, and go home.”
He rose and went home.
When the crowds saw this they were struck with awe
and glorified God who had given such authority to men.
THE GOSPEL OF THE LORD!
REFLECTION
“Courage, child, your sins are forgiven.”
The paralytic comes before Jesus carrying more than the weight of his body. He carries a life marked by pain, dependence, longing, and perhaps memories that have grown heavy through the years. Jesus gazes upon him with full understanding and deep compassion. Before addressing his physical need, He speaks to the core of his being: “Courage, child.” These words are filled with compassion. They restore a sense of belonging. They remind him that he stands before a loving Father whose mercy reaches into every place of hurt.
Then Jesus says, “Your sins are forgiven.” Forgiveness enters like light through an open window. It reaches the places where guilt has settled, where shame has taken root, where the heart has grown tired from carrying yesterday into today. Sin burdens the soul. Mercy lifts it. The Lord brings healing that begins within, then flows into the whole person.
Many of us know the exhaustion of holding on to old hurts, harsh words, failures, and regrets. We carry them quietly. We learn how to smile while our hearts remain bent under their weight. Christ encounters us in those hidden depths. His mercy gives us courage to rise again, to receive His love, and to walk forward with a heart made lighter by grace.
The mercy we receive from Christ gradually shapes the way we see others. It makes gentle our words, calms our actions, and opens our hearts to truly grasp the burdens others carry. When we know the freedom of being welcomed home by God, we become more patient in our families, more gracious in our work, and more generous in every encounter. Forgiveness turns wounds into wells of compassion. Through it, the Lord sends us into the world carrying peace for lives that have grown weary and burdened.
PRAYER
Lord Jesus, speak Your words of courage over every burden we carry. Heal our hearts through the gift of Your forgiveness and teach us to extend that same mercy to others. Raise us up each day as joyful witnesses of Your restoring love. Amen.
