TODAY’S GOSPEL READING
18 JANUARY, 2026
John 1:29-34

John the Baptist saw Jesus coming toward him and said,
“Behold, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world.
He is the one of whom I said,
‘A man is coming after me who ranks ahead of me
because he existed before me.’
I did not know him,
but the reason why I came baptizing with water
was that he might be made known to Israel.”
John testified further, saying,
“I saw the Spirit come down like a dove from the sky
and remain upon him.
I did not know him,
but the one who sent me to baptize with water told me,
‘On whomever you see the Spirit come down and remain,
he is the one who will baptize with the Holy Spirit.’
Now I have seen and testified that he is the Son of God.”

THE GOSPEL OF THE LORD!

REFLECTION

In this passage, John the Baptist points beyond himself and directs all attention to Jesus, calling Him “the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world.” This title reveals the heart of Jesus’ mission: He comes not as a distant judge, but as a self-giving sacrifice who removes sin and restores our relationship with God. John’s witness reminds us that faith begins with recognizing who Jesus truly is and trusting in what He has come to do for us.

John also testifies to the Spirit descending and remaining upon Jesus, confirming Him as the chosen One of God. This moment shows that Jesus’ ministry is empowered by the Spirit and rooted in God’s divine plan. It reassures us that Jesus is not acting on His own authority alone, but in perfect unity with the Father and the Spirit.

Finally, John’s humility stands out. He understands his role as a witness, not the center. His joy is fulfilled by pointing others to Christ. This challenges us to reflect on our own lives—whether our words and actions draw attention to ourselves or lead others closer to Jesus, the true Light of the world.

PRAYER

Lord Jesus, Lamb of God, we thank You for taking away the sin of the world and for loving us with a love that gives itself completely. Help us to recognize You more deeply each day and to trust in Your saving grace. Fill us with Your Holy Spirit, that our lives may bear witness to who You are. Like John the Baptist, grant us humility and courage to point others to You in all that we say and do. May our hearts always proclaim: You are the Son of God. Amen
