TODAY’S GOSPEL READING – 6 DECEMBER

TODAY’S GOSPEL READING
6 DECEMBER, 2025
Matthew 9:35–10:1, 5a, 6-8

Jesus went around to all the towns and villages,
teaching in their synagogues,
proclaiming the Gospel of the Kingdom,
and curing every disease and illness.
At the sight of the crowds, his heart was moved with pity for them
because they were troubled and abandoned,
like sheep without a shepherd.
Then he said to his disciples,
“The harvest is abundant but the laborers are few;
so ask the master of the harvest
to send out laborers for his harvest.”

Then he summoned his Twelve disciples
and gave them authority over unclean spirits to drive them out
and to cure every disease and every illness.

Jesus sent out these Twelve after instructing them thus,
“Go to the lost sheep of the house of Israel.
As you go, make this proclamation: ‘The Kingdom of heaven is at hand.’
Cure the sick, raise the dead,
cleanse lepers, drive out demons.
Without cost you have received; without cost you are to give.”

THE GOSPEL OF THE LORD!

REFLECTION

In today’s Gospel reading, we see Jesus Christ moving through towns and villages: teaching, proclaiming the Kingdom, healing every sickness and disease. Jesus summons the Twelve and commissions them to carry on his mission — to proclaim the nearness of God’s Kingdom, to heal, to drive out evil, to give freely what they have received freely.

As we begin this Advent season, this Gospel challenges us to ask: am I attentive to the needs around me? Do I see people in my life who are “sheep without a shepherd,” longing for guidance, healing, or compassion? Jesus’ call to his disciples — then and now — is that we become labourers in his harvest: proclaiming hope, offering service, sharing God’s mercy. Advent is a season of waiting — but waiting with purpose and readiness. May we open our hearts to serve as Jesus served: compassionately, generously, freely.

PRAYER

Heavenly Father, as the dawn of Advent beckons, open our eyes to see those around us who are lost, wounded, or forgotten. Fill us with the compassion of your Son, that we may go out as laborers in His harvest, offering healing, hope, and love.

Grant us the courage to share, without counting the cost, the gifts we have received — in service, in mercy, in joy. May our words reflect your truth, our hands bring peace, and our lives bear witness to your Kingdom — now and always. Through Christ our Lord. Amen
