TODAY’S GOSPEL READING
8 AUGUST, 2025
Matthew 16:24-28

Then Jesus told his disciples, “If any want to become my followers, let them deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me.

For those who want to save their life will lose it, and those who lose their life for my sake will find it. For what will it profit them if they gain the whole world but forfeit their life? Or what will they give in return for their life?

“For the Son of Man is to come with his angels in the glory of his Father, and then he will repay everyone for what has been done. Truly I tell you, there are some standing here who will not taste death before they see the Son of Man coming in his kingdom.”

THE GOSPEL OF THE LORD!

REFLECTION

Jesus’ call to discipleship is one of deep commitment and radical surrender. To deny oneself means to let go of personal agendas, comforts, and the desire to control life’s outcomes. Taking up the cross is not merely bearing difficulties, but willingly embracing the path of sacrificial love and obedience, even when it is painful. The paradox Jesus presents—losing life to find it—reveals the kingdom’s upside-down values. Earthly success, fame, or possessions are fleeting; eternal life is the true reward.

This passage challenges us to examine where our priorities lie. Are we seeking worldly gain at the expense of our souls? Are we prepared to let go of our attachments and walk in Christ’s footsteps, even when it costs us? Jesus reminds us that the glory of the kingdom awaits those who live in obedience to Him. True life begins when we entrust our whole selves to His purposes.

PRAYER

Lord Jesus, You have called me to follow You, not in comfort but in courage, not in ease but in surrender. Teach me to deny myself, to take up my cross daily, and to walk faithfully in Your footsteps. Give me the strength to let go of worldly pursuits and the grace to seek what truly lasts. Help me to trust that in losing my life for Your sake, I will find the fullness of life You promise. Prepare my heart for Your coming, and may I live each day ready to stand before You. Amen
