Holy Spirit Church, Palghar, Maharashtra
Holy Spirit Church, Nandakhal was originally established in 1573 by Portuguese missionaries to serve Catholics living between Nirmal and Agashi. It is the only church in the region dedicated to the Holy Spirit, making it unique in its spiritual focus. Over time, as more families settled in the area, Nandakhal became an independent parish, providing a local place of worship and community gathering.
The church retains its old-world charm with a simple rectangular plan, a tile-roofed single-nave hall, and a modest façade typical of early Portuguese churches. The main altar, side altars, and pulpit reflect the 17th–18th century colonial style, giving the space a historic and serene atmosphere. The surrounding open courtyard, grotto, and adjoining graves create a setting that combines worship, heritage, and community.
Today, Holy Spirit Church remains an active parish under the Diocese of Vasai. It continues to serve the local Catholic community, hosting regular Masses, festivals, and social activities. Known as a foundational parish in North Vasai, it has nurtured the growth of several smaller churches in the region and stands as a symbol of faith, history, and continuity for generations.
