Scripture:“Humble yourselves before the Lord, and He will exalt you.”
— James 4:10
Saint Francis of Paola chose a life of deep humility from a very young age. Born to simple parents in Italy, he withdrew into solitude as a teenager, living in a cave and dedicating himself to prayer and penance. Though many were drawn to his holiness, he avoided fame and recognition. Even when miracles surrounded his life, he remained hidden in spirit, always pointing others to God rather than himself. His humility became the foundation of his sanctity and influence.
Scripture:“This kind does not go out except by prayer and fasting”
— Matthew 17:21
Francis lived a life marked by intense prayer, fasting, and penance. He slept little, ate sparingly, and offered many sacrifices for the salvation of souls. Through this life of discipline, God granted him extraordinary gifts, including prophecy and miracles. It is said that he healed the sick, multiplied food for the poor, and even crossed the sea on his cloak when denied passage by a boatman. His life reminds us that spiritual power flows from deep union with God through prayer and sacrifice.
Scripture:“Whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.”
— Matthew 25:40
Saint Francis had a tender love for the poor. He shared whatever he had and often miraculously provided for those in need. Crowds came to him not only for spiritual guidance but also for material help, and he never turned anyone away. His compassion reflected Christ’s love, and he taught his followers to serve others with generosity and kindness. His Order, the Minims, embraced a life of simplicity and charity.
Scripture:“Speak the truth in love.”
— Ephesians 4:15
Francis was not afraid to confront injustice, even among the powerful. When King Ferdinand of Naples lived a life of pride and excess, Francis boldly rebuked him and called him to repentance. Later, he was summoned to France by King Louis XI, who was gravely ill. Francis did not flatter the king but urged him to prepare his soul for eternity. His courage shows that true holiness includes standing firm in truth, regardless of status or consequence.
Scripture:“Seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.”
— Matthew 6:33
Throughout his life, Francis depended entirely on God’s providence. Whether in solitude or leading a growing religious community, he trusted that God would provide. When his followers lacked food or resources, he encouraged them to have faith—and time and again, God answered in miraculous ways. His unwavering trust inspires us to rely on God in every circumstance.
Scripture:“All things are possible for one who believes.”
— Mark 9:23
Many miracles were attributed to Saint Francis, but he never saw them as his own doing. He remained deeply aware that all power came from God. Among the most famous is the story of him crossing the Strait of Messina on his cloak, demonstrating complete trust in God’s power. His miracles strengthened the faith of many and drew countless souls closer to God.
O God, who raised up Saint Francis of Paola as a model of humility, prayer, and charity, grant that we may follow his example in seeking You above all things. Teach us to live simply, to trust in Your providence, and to serve others with love. Give us the courage to speak truth, the strength to embrace sacrifice, and the grace to grow in holiness each day. Through his intercession, may we draw closer to You and walk faithfully on the path to eternal life. Amen
