BLESSED CARLO ACUTIS
FEAST DAY – 12th OCTOBER
Blessed Carlo Acutis was born on May 3, 1991 in London, United Kingdom to Andrea Acutis and Antonia Salzano. Hisparents were well-off and worked in Germany and the United Kingdom before settling down in Milan, Italy in 1991. Carlo demonstrated keen interest in Catholic churches from the tender age of 3, and often asked to see them. At the age of 7 he received his First Holy Communion and displayed a great fidelity for the Eucharist. He attended confession weekly and prayed before the Tabernacle, before and after Mass.
In this present age, when we are short of role models, the Universal Church has offered us a contemporary. The gift of Carlo Acutis. Carlo enjoyed visiting Assisi where St. Francis is entombed. As he grew older, he developed an interest in computers and taught himself how to code and develop websites, while still in primary school. This talent was utilised in the service of the Church, as he evangelized as a Cyber Apostle. His brief high school career was spent in the care of the Jesuits at the Institute of Leo XIII.
Acutis was known to be generous and charitable and would give his pocket money to the poor and speak up in defense of the disabled. He would invite kids to his house, whose parents were divorcing, to support them. He used his knowledge of computers and coding to build websites for Catholic organizations. His most popular website was one that listed miracles from around the world based on a catalog he compiled since age 11. He completed the site shortly before his death.
He is known as Patron of computer programmers and youth. He died on 12th October 2006 and was beatified on October 10th, 2020, at the Basilica of Saint Francis of Assisi, Assisi, Italy, by Agostino Vallini.
O God, you gave our youth of the new millennium, a powerful youth icon, the Blessed Carlo Acutis, Cyber Apostle, who lived venerating the Holy Eucharist, and dedicated his life to benefit the universal Church, by making computers his medium of evangelization building his website as a shrine to list miracles performed in various parts of the world.
As we celebrate his feast today, may our youth find and draw inspiration from this dynamic lad, to worship and venerate the celebration of the Holy Eucharist. May we seek the grace to encounter Christ through the Eucharist and live in him, attentively listening to your Holy Word, discerning and accomplishing our true calling, in Jesus’ Name. Amen
Blessed Carlo Acutis, you used your creative genius in computers, by turning it into a tool for evangelization, because of your fidelity to the Holy Eucharist and your integrity as a member of the universal Church, Christ’s Body.
Pray that we too use modern technology in the service of God and, as you said that we are born originals, but sadly, die as copies, pray that we use wisely the original talents given by God, for the better use of humanity. Pray for us, Blessed Carlo Acutis.
