Matthew 7:1-2

29 January, 2024

Judge not, that you be not judged. For with the judgment you pronounce you will be judged, and with the measure you use it will be measured to you.  Matthew 7:1–2

Eternal Father, you are a Righteous God and your Holy Word is absolute and infallible. We adore and glorify your Holy Name along with the heavenly and earthly minstrels raising their voices in praise of your glory. Lord, you have manifested abundantly the perfection we need to attain for our eternal salvation, by true obedience, repentance and following of the precepts and commandments in the Holy Bible. But your greatest command was taught by our Savior Jesus Christ, who taught us to live in love, humility, service, justice and truth, without any expectation. Jesus teaches what it means to live faithfully as a committed follower of Christ, who pursues holiness out of the deepest reverence for God.

Here, Jesus is proclaiming a high moral standard that is consistent with what it means to live as a citizen of the kingdom of God. He teaches us that believers who live in this kingdom are called to develop a strong moral ethic that reflects what it means to love God with all your heart and your neighbor as yourself. Every man should deal justly with his neighbor, in giving him what is his own, neither taking nor withholding from him. If our fellowman stands in need of our charitable help, we should impart the help required in exact justice which we would expect, if the roles were reversed. Do the same unto them, as you would want done to you. This golden rule taught by our Messiah blocks out all evil.

Father, you have given us the counsel and companionship of the Holy Spirit who exhorts us to walk in peace, truth and love, eliminating all that is unholy and not of the Lord, growing in love, faith and grace, adopting the ways of Jesus in our everyday lives. Our Christian life should be the presence of that which is good for the benefit of others and to the glory of God. Assist us to walk in spirit and truth and to love as Christ loved us, being fair and impartial, not casting wrong judgment, but reproving each other in love, so that be we reflect Christ. In his Holy Name we pray. Amen
