THE 22nd OF FEBRUARY
IN THE PRESENCE OF GOD
Then He said, “Go out and stand on the mountain before the Lord.” And behold, the Lord passed by, and a great and mighty wind tore through the mountains and shattered the rocks before the Lord, but the Lord was not in the wind. After the wind came an earthquake, but the Lord was not in the earthquake. After the earthquake came a fire, but the Lord was not in the fire. And after the fire, a still small voice. – 1 Kings 19:11-12
The prophet Elijah experienced both moments of great glory and deep despair in his ministry. It is easy to long for constant “mountaintop” experiences with the Lord, avoiding the valleys of struggle. However, without the valleys of daily life, we might rely on our own strength and forget our dependence on God. The Lord did not correct Elijah’s response but instead, chose to reveal His presence in a greater way. When Moses had asked to see Him (Exodus 34:2), the Lord allowed him only a glimpse from behind. Yet, in Elijah’s discouragement, God granted him a divine encounter without even being asked.
God’s presence is never unnoticed. Initially, He displayed His power through wind, fire, and an earthquake, but Elijah did not leave the cave until he recognized God’s gentle and loving presence in a still, small voice. It takes true focus, dedication, and a deep longing to enter into the Lord’s presence. Elijah’s despair was so overwhelming that even in God’s presence, his response remained unchanged. Yet, no one understands us better than the Lord. His comfort is beyond measure, and He provides just the right portion of His anointing to help us endure every trial.
Thank You, dear Lord, for never abandoning me, even in the hardest moments of my life, just as you stayed constantly, with Elijah, even when he couldn’t feel Your presence. In Your great mercy, You do not treat me as I deserve but according to Your unchanging and perfect nature. You have always been, and always will be, love. Your kindness and faithfulness toward me are never-ending, anew each morning. Help me seek Your presence more often, and as I spend time with You, may I become more like You. In Jesus’ Name, I pray. Amen
