Proverbs 17:17

9 January, 2024

A friend loveth at all times, and a brother is born for adversity. – Proverbs 17:17

Lord God, we fear you, love you, adore you, glorify you and truly trust you, for only you define absolute faithfulness, perfect righteousness, infallible mercy, infinite love, indomitable strength and inscrutable and undisputed wisdom and understanding. In the form of man, there is only you, as the Son of Man, who has displayed true valour, love, compassion and friendship akin to brotherhood.

A sincere and genuine friend, loves us especially when we are defeated and debilitated, not just in prosperity, but more so in adversity, when false friends forsake us. We know true friendship at times when tragedy, illness, misfortune strikes us and we find them around us, encouraging and uplifting, supportive and understanding. Blood thicker than blood proves as true, as blood thicker than water, where friendship never flounders but equals brotherhood.

The greatest example is given by our Lord Jesus, who, although betrayed by Judas, denied by Peter and deserted by his disciples, who, jeered at and crucified by mankind, stayed true to his promise of delivering mankind and earning them salvation. By dying for us and cancelling our entire debt of iniquity, he proved to be true, especially in adversity, and so are true friends, who become our brothers and show more solidarity than a real kin would by obligation. Help us, Lord, as Christian brothers and sisters in Christ, to share an everlasting bond, in Jesus’ Name. Amen
