Psalm 36 – The Transgression of the Wicked

For the director of music. Of David the servant of the Lord.

1 I have a message from God in my heart
concerning the sinfulness of the wicked:
There is no fear of God
before their eyes.

2 In their own eyes they flatter themselves
too much to detect or hate their sin.

3 The words of their mouths are wicked and deceitful;
they fail to act wisely or do good.

4 Even on their beds they plot evil;
they commit themselves to a sinful course
and do not reject what is wrong.

5 Your love, Lord, reaches to the heavens,
your faithfulness to the skies.

6 Your righteousness is like the highest mountains,
your justice like the great deep.
You, Lord, preserve both people and animals.

7 How priceless is your unfailing love, O God!
People take refuge in the shadow of your wings.

8 They feast on the abundance of your house;
you give them drink from your river of delights.

9 For with you is the fountain of life;
in your light we see light.

10 Continue your love to those who know you,
your righteousness to the upright in heart.”

11 May the foot of the proud not come against me,
nor the hand of the wicked drive me away.

12 See how the evildoers lie fallen-thrown down, not able to rise!

Psalm 36:1 Or A message from God is The transgression of the wicked / resides in their hearts. In Hebrew texts 36:1-12 is numbered 36:2-13.

1. Finding Refuge:

Life often places us between two realities. On one side, we see the brokenness of human nature, selfishness, pride, dishonesty, and sin. On the other side, we experience the overwhelming goodness, mercy, and faithfulness of God.

“The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it?”
Jeremiah 17:9

2. The Reality of Sin:

David begins the psalm with a sobering description of the human heart apart from God. “The absence of reverence for God leads people into sin. When people stop acknowledging God’s authority, they begin trusting their own desires and wisdom.

“The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, but fools despise wisdom and instruction.”
Proverbs 1:7

3. The Greatness of God’s Love:

After describing human sinfulness, David suddenly shifts the focus toward God’s incredible character. This image of taking shelter under God’s wings reveals His tender care and protection. Just as a bird covers its young to keep them safe, God invites us to find refuge in Him.

“Know therefore that the Lord your God is God; He is the faithful God, keeping His covenant of love to a thousand generations.”
Deuteronomy 7:9

4. God is the Source of Life:

David then declares one of the most powerful truths in Scripture: God is the source of all life, wisdom, and truth. Without Him, people walk in spiritual darkness. Through Him, we gain understanding, direction, and purpose. Jesus later echoes this truth in the New Testament when He says

“I am the way, the truth, and the life.”
John 14:6

5. A Prayer for Protection and Guidance:

The psalm ends with David praying for God’s continued guidance and protection. David understands that believers constantly need God’s grace. The Christian life is not about relying on personal strength but about remaining dependent on God’s mercy each day.

“My grace is sufficient for you, for My strength is made perfect in weakness”
2 Corinthians 12:9

Psalm 36 paints a clear picture of both human brokenness and God’s unfailing love. While sin leads people away from truth and righteousness, God offers mercy, protection, and life to all who trust in Him. His love reaches higher than the heavens, His faithfulness never fails, and His presence satisfies the deepest needs of our hearts.
