“Do not neglect to show hospitality to strangers, for by doing that some have entertained angels without knowing it.”
— Hebrews 13:2
Augustine Zhao Rong was a soldier assigned to escort the French missionary, Bishop John Gabriel Taurin Dufresse, to prison. Expecting to guard a criminal, he instead encountered a man whose serenity, forgiveness, and unwavering faith revealed the presence of Christ. Deeply moved by the bishop’s holy witness, Zhao Rong embraced the Christian faith and was later baptized.
God often enters our lives through ordinary people and unexpected situations. Every encounter can become an invitation to experience His grace and discover His saving love. The Lord frequently hides His greatest blessings within the simplest moments, quietly drawing hearts closer to Himself.
“Let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father in heaven.”
— Matthew 5:16
Before Bishop Dufresse preached to Augustine Zhao Rong, he preached through his life. His peaceful acceptance of suffering, his forgiveness of his persecutors, and his unwavering trust in God became the living Gospel that transformed Zhao Rong’s heart.
Words can explain the faith, but a holy life makes Christ visible. The witness of genuine holiness continues to inspire and lead others to God long after spoken words have faded.
“If anyone is in Christ, there is a new creation.”
— 2 Corinthians 5:17
As a soldier, Augustine Zhao Rong had learned discipline, obedience, and courage. After his conversion, these same qualities became powerful gifts in the service of Christ. He was ordained a priest and faithfully served the Church despite increasing persecution.
God does not discard the talents He has given us. Instead, His grace transforms them into instruments for building His Kingdom. Conversion perfects our lives by directing our strengths toward His glory.
“Whoever says, ‘I abide in Him,’ ought to walk just as He walked.”
— 1 John 2:6
The example of Bishop Dufresse inspired Augustine Zhao Rong to follow Christ with complete dedication. The missionary he once guarded became the model he chose to imitate. As a priest, Zhao Rong faithfully proclaimed the Gospel and remained steadfast in his calling until death.
True discipleship means allowing the life of Christ to be reflected in our own. The more closely we follow Him, the more His love, mercy, and truth shine through us.
“If the Son makes you free, you will be free indeed.”
— John 8:36
Both Bishop Dufresse and Augustine Zhao Rong experienced imprisonment and persecution because of their faith. Though their bodies were restrained, their hearts remained free through their complete trust in Christ. Augustine eventually suffered martyrdom during the persecution of Christians in China.
No earthly power can imprison a soul that belongs to God. True freedom comes from remaining faithful to Christ, even in suffering and adversity.
“You are the light of the world.”
— Matthew 5:14
The faithful witness of Bishop Dufresse led Augustine Zhao Rong to Christ. Augustine then became a devoted priest whose own example strengthened countless believers. His martyrdom, together with the Holy Martyrs of China, continues to inspire Christians throughout the world.
A single life lived faithfully for God can influence generations. Acts of quiet holiness often produce fruits that only eternity will fully reveal.
“Be faithful until death, and I will give you the crown of life.”
— Revelation 2:10
Augustine Zhao Rong did not become a martyr in a single moment. He first responded to God’s grace, embraced the faith, served faithfully as a priest, and persevered through every trial. His daily fidelity prepared him to offer the ultimate witness of love by laying down his life for Christ.
The path to holiness is built through countless daily acts of obedience. Every faithful “yes” to God strengthens the soul and prepares it for complete union with Him.
O glorious Saint Augustine Zhao Rong, faithful priest and courageous martyr, you discovered Christ through the holy witness of Bishop Dufresse and devoted your entire life to proclaiming the Gospel.
Pray for us, that we may always recognize God’s presence in those He places along our path and remain open to His call. Help us to live our faith with courage, humility, and unwavering trust, especially in times of trial.
Intercede for the Church in China, for missionaries throughout the world, for priests, catechists, and for all who suffer persecution because of their faith. May our words, actions, and love always reflect Christ, leading others to Him.
When our earthly journey is complete, may we join you and all the saints in praising our Lord forever in His heavenly Kingdom. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.
Saint Augustine Zhao Rong and the Holy Martyrs of China, pray for us.
