THE POVERTY OF CLARE: EMPTY HANDS THAT HOLD GOD
“Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.”
— Matthew 5:3
Clare embraced radical poverty, not because she despised material things, but because she desired to possess nothing that could come between her and Christ. She left her wealthy family and chose a life of simplicity with Francis and the sisters at San Damiano. Even when Pope Gregory IX urged her to accept possessions for the security of her community, Clare firmly defended the privilege of poverty.
Spiritual Insight: True poverty is not merely having little, but possessing nothing above God. Clare teaches us that when the heart is emptied of pride, attachment and self reliance, it becomes completely available to divine love.
THE GAZE THAT TRANSFIGURES
“Looking to Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith.”

Clare constantly directed her heart towards Christ, especially Christ Crucified. In her letters to Agnes of Prague, she urged her to gaze upon Christ, contemplate Him and imitate Him. Clare herself lived this contemplative gaze, allowing the suffering and humility of Jesus to shape her entire life.
Spiritual Insight: To gaze upon Christ is to allow His gaze to transform us. Clare teaches that contemplation is not an escape from life, but a deeper surrender to Christ until His love becomes the centre of our thoughts, choices and actions.
THE EUCHARISTIC RADIANCE
“Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood remains in me, and I in them.”

During the attempted attack on San Damiano by soldiers, Clare courageously had the Blessed Sacrament brought before her. According to her early biographies, the attackers withdrew after she prayed before the Eucharist. Whether contemplated as a miracle or as a testimony to her profound Eucharistic faith, the event reveals the extraordinary confidence Clare placed in Christ’s Presence.
Spiritual Insight: Clare teaches us to seek our strength in the Eucharistic Christ. In moments of fear and darkness, the Presence of Jesus can become our deepest protection, peace and light.
THE HIDDEN FLOWER OF SILENCE
“Be still, and know that I am God.”

For most of her life, Clare remained within the enclosure of San Damiano, dedicating herself to prayer, penance, work and the care of her sisters. Though hidden from the world, her influence reached far beyond the walls of her monastery. Popes, bishops, religious leaders and ordinary people sought her prayers and counsel.
Spiritual Insight: Clare reminds us that a life does not have to be publicly visible to be spiritually fruitful. God often accomplishes His greatest work in the silence of a surrendered heart. We do not need to be seen to shine for Christ.
THE BRIDEGROOM’S MIRROR
“Those who abide in me and I in them bear much fruit.”

Clare desired to become a living reflection of Christ, especially in His poverty, humility, gentleness and suffering. She encouraged Agnes of Prague to look continually into the mirror of Christ and to allow His image to become her own. Clare’s sisters witnessed this imitation of Christ in her prayer, fasting, compassion and humble service.
Spiritual Insight: Holiness is not about creating an impressive image of ourselves. It is about allowing Christ to become increasingly visible in us. Clare teaches that the more completely we surrender ourselves to Him, the more faithfully we reflect His love.
THE VISION FROM THE WALLS
“Faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen.”

When Clare was seriously ill and unable to attend the celebration of Christmas Mass, she is traditionally said to have received a miraculous vision of the Mass from her room at San Damiano. This experience became associated with her later patronage of television and communications.
Spiritual Insight: Clare’s experience reminds us that physical limitations cannot imprison a heart united with God. Her longing to participate in the Eucharistic celebration shows that love can overcome distance, illness and every human limitation.
A LAMP IN THE DARKNESS
“You are the light of the world. A city built on a hill cannot be hid.”

Clare’s spirituality was simple, hidden and deeply centred on Christ. She embraced poverty, contemplation, Eucharistic devotion, silence and the Cross. From the humble monastery of San Damiano, her light spread throughout the Church and continues to inspire generations.
Clare teaches us that simplicity can reveal glory, silence can carry great spiritual power, and a heart that rests completely in God discovers that it lacks nothing.
PRAYER
Saint Clare of Assisi, teach us to seek Christ above every earthly possession and to find our true treasure in Him alone. Give us your love for the Eucharist, your courage in suffering, your devotion to prayer and your humility in hiddenness. Help us to gaze upon Christ until His image is reflected in our lives. May we learn to live simply, love deeply, serve humbly and trust God completely. When darkness surrounds us, help us remember that Christ is our light and that those who possess Him possess everything. Amen.
