A HEART FOR THE POOR
“Whoever is kind to the poor lends to the Lord, and he will reward them for what they have done.”
— Proverbs 19:17
From her childhood in Aytona, Spain, Teresa showed a tender concern for the poor. She would bring needy people to her aunt’s home so that they could receive food and assistance. This early compassion became a defining characteristic of her life. She teaches us that charity begins when we notice the suffering of another person and respond with love.
WHEN GOD CHANGES OUR PLANS
“For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, declares the Lord.”
— Isaiah 55:8
Teresa desired to enter religious life, but her attempt to join the Poor Clares did not succeed. Instead of allowing disappointment to weaken her faith, she remained open to God’s direction. Her spiritual journey eventually led her to a completely different vocation: caring for abandoned elderly people. Her life reminds us that a closed door may sometimes be God’s invitation to a greater mission.
A LIFE OF SERVICE
“Whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant.”

Teresa joined Father Saturnino López Novoa in his work for poor and abandoned elderly people. In 1872, she and a small group of companions began their mission at Barbastro. The beginnings were marked by simplicity and poverty, but Teresa accepted the responsibility of leading the new community. She remained its superior until her death.
SEEING CHRIST IN THE ELDERLY
“Whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.”

Teresa understood that caring for abandoned elderly people was not merely social work; it was an expression of love for Christ Himself. She devoted her congregation to giving the elderly dignity, affection, shelter and a home. Her life beautifully reflects the Gospel teaching that Christ is encountered in those who are vulnerable and forgotten.
HUMILITY IN THE MIDST OF GREAT RESPONSIBILITY
“God opposes the proud but shows favour to the humble.”

Although Teresa became the leader of a rapidly growing congregation, she remained simple, gentle and deeply dependent upon Divine Providence. Her greatness did not come from seeking recognition, but from allowing God to work through her.
LOVE THAT BECAME A MISSION
“Let us not love with words or speech but with actions and in truth.”

Teresa’s compassion became an organized mission of mercy. The small community founded in Barbastro grew remarkably, and by the end of her life the congregation had established many houses dedicated to serving abandoned elderly people. Her life shows that one loving heart, surrendered to God, can become the beginning of a work that touches countless lives.
FAITHFULNESS UNTIL THE END
“Be faithful unto death, and I will give you the crown of life.”

During a cholera outbreak in 1897, Teresa continued serving those who were suffering before becoming ill herself. She died on 26 August 1897. Her final days reveal a life that did not retreat from sacrifice but remained faithful to its mission of loving and serving the abandoned.
HONOURING THE DIGNITY OF OLD AGE
“Rise in the presence of the aged, show respect for the elderly.”

Saint Teresa’s special mission speaks powerfully to our times. She recognized that old age must never become a reason for loneliness, neglect or loss of dignity. Her ministry proclaimed through practical love that every elderly person is precious in the sight of God.
A HEART ROOTED IN GOD
“Remain in me, as I also remain in you.”

Teresa’s outward service flowed from an inward life of faith. She encouraged her sisters to follow Christ with simplicity, obedience, humility and poverty. Her devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary was also deeply woven into her life and mission.
A SAINT FOR OUR TIMES
“Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth… but.”

Saint Teresa of Jesus Jornet Ibars speaks especially to a society where many elderly people can experience loneliness and abandonment. Her witness challenges us to look beyond age, usefulness or independence and to see the sacred person within each human being. Her life invites us to offer time, patience, tenderness and companionship to those who may feel forgotten.
PRAYER
Saint Teresa of Jesus Jornet Ibars, you gave your life to Christ by serving the poor, the sick and the abandoned elderly. Teach us to recognize Jesus in every person who needs our love and care. Help us to accept God’s plans even when they differ from our own, and give us the humility to serve without seeking recognition. Obtain for us a compassionate heart, generous hands and a faithful spirit. May we honour the elderly, comfort the lonely and bring dignity to those who feel forgotten. Saint Teresa of Jesus Jornet Ibars, pray for us and help us to become instruments of God’s merciful love. Amen.
