TODAY’S GOSPEL READING
31 AUGUST, 2025
Luke 14:1, 7–14

When Jesus was invited to dine at the house of a leading Pharisee on the Sabbath, He observed how the guests chose places of honor at the table. He told them a parable:

“When you are invited to a wedding banquet, do not take the place of honor—you may be humbled and asked to move. Instead, go and sit in the lowest place, so when the host comes, he may say, ‘Friend, move up higher,’ and you will be honored.

For everyone who exalts themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted.”

Then He told the host: “When you invite guests to a meal, don’t invite your friends, relatives, or the rich—people who can repay you. Instead, invite the poor, the crippled, the lame, the blind.

You will be blessed because they cannot repay you; you will be repaid at the resurrection of the righteous.”

THE GOSPEL OF THE LORD!

REFLECTION

Today’s Gospel invites us into the heart of Christ’s wisdom on humility and generosity. At a glance, it might seem like advice on social etiquette—but it’s profoundly more:

Humility as dignity: Taking the lowest seat isn’t self-depreciation—it’s wisdom. When we honor others and let go of needing recognition, God lifts us up in ways we don’t expect.

True hospitality: Inviting the poor, the marginalized, those who can’t repay—this redefines what it means to love and celebrate. It points us to a kingdom where grace, not return on investment, reigns supreme.

A kingdom upside-down: Jesus turns human values on their head. Here, real greatness is found in serving and lifting the lowly, and true reward is found in divine, not human, approval.

PRAYER

Heavenly Father, give me the humility to seek the lowest seat, trusting in Your exaltation. Grant me a generous heart to reach out to those who cannot repay, seeing in them Your image and Your invitation to Your heavenly banquet. In Jesus’ Name. Amen
