TODAY’S GOSPEL READING
6 SEPTEMBER, 2025
Luke 6:1-5
One sabbath while Jesus was going through the grainfields, his disciples plucked some heads of grain, rubbed them in their hands, and ate them.
But some of the Pharisees said, “Why are you doing what is not lawful on the sabbath?”
Jesus answered, “Have you not read what David did when he and his companions were hungry?
He entered the house of God and took and ate the bread of the Presence, which it is not lawful for any but the priests to eat, and gave some to his companions?”
Then he said to them, “The Son of Man is lord of the sabbath.”
THE GOSPEL OF THE LORD!

REFLECTION
This gospel passage highlights Jesus’ authority over the law and the deeper meaning of the Sabbath. The Pharisees were bound to the external observance of the law, but Jesus reminds them that the Sabbath was made for life and mercy, not rigid legalism. By citing David, He shows that human need takes precedence over ritual observance. Jesus reveals Himself as the Lord of the Sabbath, the one who fulfills the law and brings rest to the weary. True Sabbath is found in Christ, who gives freedom, mercy, and nourishment for the soul.

PRAYER
Lord Jesus, You are the Lord of the Sabbath and the giver of true rest. Teach us to seek You above rules and traditions, to understand that Your mercy is greater than sacrifice. Help us to live with compassion, to value people above ritual, and to find in You the peace that refreshes our spirit. May our lives reflect the freedom and love that You bring, so that in honoring You, we may enter into the true rest of God. Amen
