HER NAME IS A SHIELD
“Take the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming darts of the evil one.”
— Ephesians 6:16
At the Annunciation, Mary received God’s call with courage and trust: “Behold, I am the handmaid of the Lord.” Luke 1:38. Her life shows us that trusting God gives strength in moments of uncertainty. When fear or temptation attacks us, calling upon Mary can remind us that we are not alone and that she continually leads us to the protection of God.
HER NAME LEADS US TO JESUS
“Do whatever he tells you.”
— John 2:5
At Cana, Mary noticed the needs of others and brought them to Jesus. She did not draw attention to herself but directed everyone towards her Son. Her name should likewise lead us closer to Christ. Whenever we call upon Mary, we can remember her loving invitation to trust Jesus and follow His will.
HER NAME IS MEDICINE FOR THE HEART
“My soul magnifies the Lord, and my spirit rejoices in God my Saviour.”
— Luke 1:46–47
When Mary visited Elizabeth, her presence brought joy and consolation, and the child in Elizabeth’s womb leaped for joy. Mary carried Christ within her and became a bearer of hope. In moments of sorrow, anxiety or discouragement, invoking her name can turn our hearts towards the peace and consolation that come from Jesus.
HER NAME TRANSFORMS FEAR INTO COURAGE
“Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favour with God.”
— Luke 1:30
Mary faced the mystery of the Annunciation, the journey to Bethlehem, the flight into Egypt and the suffering of Calvary with remarkable faith. She did not allow fear to overcome her trust in God. Her example teaches us to face our own difficulties with courage, knowing that God is with us.
HER NAME IS A WHISPER OF HOPE IN HISTORY
“And a sword will pierce your own soul too.”
— Luke 2:35
Mary stood faithfully beneath the Cross when Jesus suffered and died. Even in the darkest hour, she remained beside Him in faith and hope. Her life reminds us that God can bring redemption through suffering and that no darkness is beyond His power. When the world feels troubled and uncertain, Mary’s name reminds us to remain anchored in God’s promises.
HER NAME IS A CALL TO TRUST
“Blessed is she who believed that there would be a fulfilment of what was spoken to her from the Lord.”
— Luke 1:45
Mary’s entire life was a response of faith to God. From Nazareth to Calvary and into the joy of the Resurrection, she remained united with her Son. To honour the Most Holy Name of Mary is to imitate her faith, surrender and love, allowing her to lead us ever closer to Jesus.
PRAYER
Holy Mary, Mother of God, your name is a source of comfort, courage and hope. In times of fear, remind us to trust God. In times of sorrow, bring us closer to Jesus. In moments of temptation, help us remain faithful. Teach us, like you, to say yes to God’s will and to follow Christ with unwavering love. Most Holy Mary, pray for us and lead us always to your Son. Amen.
