Proverbs 18:21

10 May, 2022

Death and life are in the power of the tongue, and those who love it will eat its fruits. – Proverbs 18:21

Lord God, we worship you, and reverently acknowledge you as our Father in heaven. Our Lord Jesus radically sanctified our lives towards holiness and exhorted us by preaching and by example, to love and forgive, thus changing our hardened hearts. Our foremost desire is to live in you and to please you by perfecting our ways to be attuned to your ways. We surrender our lives to you, Lord, in totality. We know that our tongues can become dangerous weapons.

It can bring a blessing, when holiness flows from the it, or it can be life-threatening, when twisted and distorted lies and sinful use of the tongue brings the user into iniquity. Rebellion against you, Lord, is the surest way of endangering our soul and putting it into needless jeopardy, binding us in irrevocable chains of ignominy. But the sinner suffers loss of his soul, forever relegated to the depths of darkness and bondage, in the pit of the evil one.

Our words should be used for the worship and praise of your Name, for teaching and revealing the good news of the gospel and of salvation for all, for turning a sinner to the paths of righteousness, holding no grudges and forgiving others. Our tongues should be controlled and bridled. Help us to overcome our weaknesses and use our tongues for your greater glory, in Jesus’ Name. Amen
