
Saint Josemaría grew up in a loving Christian family but also endured the heartbreaking loss of three younger sisters during childhood. These early experiences of both happiness and sorrow formed in him a deep trust in God’s providence and strengthened his compassion for others.

His family’s unwavering faith during these painful losses taught him that God can bring spiritual strength even through suffering. He later encouraged others to embrace both joys and trials as opportunities to grow closer to Christ.
As a teenager, Josemaría saw the barefoot footprints of a Carmelite friar walking through the snow. The sight of such sacrifice deeply moved him and awakened a desire to discover God’s plan for his own life.

That silent witness became the turning point that led him to enter the seminary. It reminded him that the example of a holy life can inspire others more powerfully than many words.
For many years, Josemaría prayed earnestly, seeking to understand the mission God had prepared for him. Though he did not yet know the details, he remained patient and faithful.

During this period he devoted himself to prayer, study, and priestly formation, confident that God would reveal His will at the proper time.
After his ordination in 1925, Father Josemaría faithfully served in parishes, ministered to the poor, visited the sick, and cared for those in need while awaiting the work God had entrusted to him.

His generous service among ordinary people prepared him for the wider mission that God would soon reveal.
On 2 October 1928, during a retreat in Madrid, God inspired Josemaría to found Opus Dei, proclaiming that every baptized person is called to holiness through ordinary daily life.

He spent the rest of his life spreading this message throughout the world, helping countless people discover that sanctity is possible in every profession and vocation.
Saint Josemaría taught that work is not merely a way to earn a living but a means of loving God and serving others. Every honest task, however simple, can become an offering to the Lord.

Whether writing, teaching, cleaning, studying, or caring for a family, he encouraged Christians to perform every duty with excellence, love, and prayer.
During the Spanish Civil War, religious persecution forced Father Josemaría into hiding. Despite constant danger, he secretly celebrated the sacraments and encouraged those whose faith was being tested.

His courageous escape across the Pyrenees into safer territory allowed him to continue the mission God had entrusted to him, demonstrating unwavering confidence in divine providence.
Saint Josemaría respected the freedom of every person and taught that Christians should freely choose to live the Gospel while taking responsibility for transforming society through their daily lives.

He urged lay men and women to live their faith with integrity in their families, workplaces, and communities, trusting that grace perfects human freedom rather than replacing it.
Josemaría radiated joy because he lived with the constant awareness that he was a beloved child of God. Even in difficulties, he encouraged people to remain cheerful and hopeful.

Those who knew him often recalled his warm smile, his sense of humour, and his fatherly kindness, which reflected his deep confidence in God’s love.
Throughout his life, Saint Josemaría proclaimed that holiness is not reserved for priests or religious alone but is the vocation of every Christian.

Through his preaching, writings, and personal example, he inspired millions to seek God in ordinary life, proving that every home, workplace, and daily duty can become a path to sainthood.
