Matthew 6:24-34
✠ A reading from the holy Gospel according to Matthew
Jesus said to his disciples: “No one can serve two masters. He will either hate one and love the other, or be devoted to one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and mammon.
“Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink, or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more than food and the body more than clothing?
Look at the birds in the sky; they do not sow or reap, they gather nothing into barns, yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are not you more important than they? Can any of you by worrying add a single moment to your life-span? Why are you anxious about clothes?
Learn from the way the wild flowers grow. They do not work or spin. But I tell you that not even Solomon in all his splendor was clothed like one of them. If God so clothes the grass of the field, which grows today and is thrown into the oven tomorrow, will he not much more provide for you, O you of little faith?
So do not worry and say, ‘What are we to eat?’ or ‘What are we to drink?’ or ‘What are we to wear?’ All these things the pagans seek. Your heavenly Father knows that you need them all. But seek first the Kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be given you besides. Do not worry about tomorrow; tomorrow will take care of itself. Sufficient for a day is its own evil.”
THE GOSPEL OF THE LORD!
REFLECTION
In this passage, Jesus reminds us not to be anxious about our needs—what to eat, drink, or wear—because our Heavenly Father already knows what we need. He points to the birds of the air and the lilies of the field as living examples of God’s provision. If God takes care of them, how much more will He care for us, His beloved children?
At its core, this Gospel challenges us to examine where we place our trust. Are we consumed by worldly concerns—wealth, status, material comfort—or do we genuinely trust God to provide? Jesus isn’t saying we shouldn’t plan or work; He’s saying not to worry like those who don’t know God. Instead, He urges us to “seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness” and promises that all else will follow. Trusting God brings peace; worrying reveals misplaced priorities.
Let go of control and live each day with faith, trusting that God sees, knows, and cares. When we prioritize Him, everything else falls into its rightful place.
PRAYER
Heavenly Father, though my heart trembles with constant worry, yet I know Your care has already handled all. As You always care for all of creation, my heart should know I am included as well. Give me the strength to lay down my anxious thoughts and cling to Your constant blessings. Help me seek You in the now and tomorrow. Be my peace and strength, my refuge and provision. In Jesus’ Name I pray. Amen
