TODAY’S GOSPEL READING
31 OCTOBER 2026
LUKE 14:1, 7-11

A reading from the Holy Gospel according to Saint Luke.
One Sabbath, Jesus went to dine at the house of one of the leading Pharisees, and the people there were observing Him carefully.
He told a parable to those who had been invited, noticing how they were choosing the places of honour at the table.

“When you are invited by someone to a wedding banquet, do not recline at table in the place of honour. A more distinguished guest than you may have been invited by him, and the host who invited both of you may approach you and say, ‘Give your place to this person.’ Then you would proceed with embarrassment to take the lowest place.
Rather, when you are invited, go and take the lowest place, so that when the host comes to you he may say, ‘My friend, move up to a higher position.’ Then you will enjoy the esteem of your companions at the table.
For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, but the one who humbles himself will be exalted.”
THE GOSPEL OF THE LORD!

REFLECTION
THE BEAUTY OF HUMILITY: In today’s Gospel, Jesus teaches us a profound lesson about humility. At a gathering in the house of a Pharisee, He notices how the guests compete for the places of honour. He uses this situation to remind them that true greatness does not come from seeking recognition, prestige or admiration, but from possessing a humble and loving heart.

Humility is not about considering ourselves worthless or inferior to others. It is about recognising that everything we possess is a gift from God. A truly humble person does not need to boast, demand attention or seek appreciation. Instead, such a person serves others quietly, generously and lovingly.
Jesus Himself is the perfect example of humility. Though He was the Son of God, He chose to become a servant, associate with the poor and sinners, and ultimately sacrifice His life for humanity. He teaches us that the way to God’s Kingdom is through humility, obedience and selfless love.
This Gospel invites us to examine our own lives. Do we seek praise and recognition? Do we become hurt when others are appreciated more than we are? Do we insist on having the first place in our families, relationships and communities?

God does not measure our greatness by our position, possessions or achievements, but by the sincerity of our hearts and the love we show others.
Let us therefore learn to take the humble path, serve without expecting rewards, forgive without resentment and love without conditions. When we humble ourselves before God, He will lift us up in His own time and in His own way.

PRAYER
Heavenly Father, thank You for the beautiful lesson of humility that Your Son, Jesus, teaches us today.
Remove from our hearts all pride, arrogance, jealousy and the desire for recognition. Help us never to seek positions of honour or importance, but to find joy in serving others with love and generosity.
Lord Jesus, teach us to follow Your example of humility, gentleness and selfless service.

Give us the grace to appreciate others, rejoice in their achievements and remain content with whatever place You have chosen for us.
May we never seek the praise of people, but always strive to please You through our thoughts, words and actions. Keep us humble in our successes, patient in our trials and grateful for all Your blessings. May our lives reflect Your love and humility every day. Amen.
True greatness in God’s eyes is not found in the highest seat at the table, but in the humblest heart that serves with love.
