TODAY’S GOSPEL READING
5 FEBRUARY, 2025
Mark 6:1-6

Jesus departed from there and came to his native place,
accompanied by his disciples.
When the sabbath came he began to teach in the synagogue,
and many who heard him were astonished.
They said, “Where did this man get all this?
What kind of wisdom has been given him?
What mighty deeds are wrought by his hands!
Is he not the carpenter, the son of Mary,
and the brother of James and Joseph and Judas and Simon?
And are not his sisters here with us?”
And they took offense at him.
Jesus said to them,
“A prophet is not without honor except in his native place
and among his own kin and in his own house.”
So he was not able to perform any mighty deed there,
apart from curing a few sick people by laying his hands on them.
He was amazed at their lack of faith.

THE GOSPEL OF THE LORD!

REFLECTION

Mark 6:1-6 reveals the challenges of faith and familiarity. Jesus returns to His hometown, where His teachings and miracles are met with skepticism by those who know Him. The people’s inability to see beyond their preconceived notions of Jesus as a mere carpenter demonstrates how familiarity can blind us to divine potential. This passage reminds us of the dangers of spiritual complacency and how our biases can limit our faith. Despite Jesus’ wisdom and miraculous works, He is rejected because people struggle to reconcile the extraordinary with the ordinary. Their lack of faith grieves Jesus and limits the miracles He can perform there. This reflection challenges us to examine our own hearts—are we so bound by assumptions or doubts that we fail to recognize God’s work in our lives? Faith requires humility and openness to see the extraordinary in the everyday.

PRAYER

Lord Jesus, help me to see You clearly in every aspect of my life, even in the ordinary and familiar. Remove the blinders of doubt, pride, and complacency that hinder my faith. Teach me to trust in Your power and presence, especially when it challenges my understanding. May my heart remain open to Your works and my spirit receptive to Your Word. Forgive me for the times I have failed to recognize You in my life. Strengthen my faith so that I may witness Your miracles and glorify You in all things. In Your Holy Name I pray. Amen
