John 2:13-22

Since the Passover of the Jews was near, Jesus went up to Jerusalem.
He found in the temple area those who sold oxen, sheep, and doves, as well as the money-changers seated there.
He made a whip out of cords and drove them all out of the temple area, with the sheep and oxen, and he spilled the coins of the money-changers and overturned their tables.
To those who sold doves he said, “Take these out of here, and stop making my Father’s house a marketplace.”
His disciples recalled the words of Scripture, “Zeal for your house will consume me.”
The Jews then said to him, “What sign can you show us for doing this?”
Jesus answered them, “Destroy this temple and in three days I will raise it up.”
The Jews then said, “This temple has been under construction for forty-six years, and will you raise it up in three days?”
But he was speaking about the temple of his Body.

THE GOSPEL OF THE LORD!

REFLECTION

Today, we contemplate Jesus’ bold action in the Temple — not simply an act of protest, but a revelation of deeper truth. He drives out the merchants from the sacred space, saying, “Stop making my Father’s house a marketplace.” This challenges us: what have we turned into the “marketplace” of our lives — the sacred places of our hearts, our relationships, our communities?

Moreover, Jesus identifies himself with the Temple: when he says “Destroy this temple and in three days I will raise it up,” he points to his body as the new dwelling-place of God.

In a world full of distractions and transactions, we are invited to rediscover worship in spirit and truth, to honour the sacredness of our own bodies and the communal life of faith, recognising that we are God’s temple. We are called to live not as commodities in a marketplace, but as dwelling-places of the Holy Spirit, building on the foundation of Christ.

PRAYER

Heavenly Father, You have chosen to dwell among us in your Son, and you have called us to be temples of your Spirit. Cleanse our hearts of all that diminishes holiness.

Grant us the courage to overturn the tables of distraction and self-interest, and to honour you in truth and simplicity.
May we live in the awareness that our bodies, our communities, our world are your sacred space.

Strengthen us to build wisely upon the foundation of Christ, so that in all we are and all we do, you may be glorified.
Through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen
