THE CALL WITHIN A CALL
Saint Teresa of Calcutta teaches us that God often speaks quietly, inviting us to move beyond what is comfortable into a deeper mission of love. While she was already faithfully serving as a teacher and religious sister, she experienced a profound call to leave the convent school and serve the poorest of the poor in the streets of Calcutta.
“Speak, Lord, for your servant is listening.”

Her experience reminds us that God may place a new calling within our hearts at unexpected moments. We need prayer, silence and an attentive heart to recognise His invitation.
SEEING CHRIST IN THE DISTRESSING DISGUISE OF THE POOR
For Saint Teresa, every suffering person was worthy of love and dignity because she saw Christ in them. She left the security of the convent and went into the streets to care for people who were sick, dying, abandoned and forgotten. She founded homes where the dying could receive care and dignity.
“Speaking the truth in love, we are to grow up in every way into him who is the head, into Christ.”

Her life challenges us to recognise Christ in those who are lonely, rejected, poor or difficult to love. Genuine Christian service sees beyond appearances and responds with compassion.
THE DARK NIGHT OF THE SOUL
Saint Teresa experienced many years of profound spiritual dryness and a painful sense of God’s silence. Yet she continued to pray, serve the poor and remain faithful to her vocation. Her hidden suffering did not prevent her from becoming an instrument of God’s love.
“My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?”

Her life teaches us that faith is not dependent upon feelings. Even when God seems distant, we can continue trusting Him and loving others. Faithfulness in darkness can become one of the deepest expressions of love.
SMALL THINGS WITH GREAT LOVE
Saint Teresa believed that holiness could be found in simple acts performed with extraordinary love. She washed wounds, fed the hungry, comforted the dying, cared for abandoned children and welcomed people whom society had forgotten. Her work began with small acts of service and grew into a worldwide mission.
“Whoever is faithful in very little is faithful also in much.”

We do not need great achievements to serve God. A kind word, a patient response, a helping hand, a visit to someone who is lonely or a simple act of forgiveness can become an offering of love when done sincerely.
HUMILITY AS A PATHWAY TO GLORY
Although Saint Teresa received worldwide recognition, including the Nobel Peace Prize, she continually directed attention away from herself and towards God. She considered herself an instrument in His hands and sought to remain humble while serving others.
“God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.”

Her life shows that true greatness is found not in being admired but in allowing God to work through us. Humility makes room for grace and enables our lives to point beyond ourselves to God.
JOY AS A SIGN OF HOLINESS
Saint Teresa endured poverty, rejection, exhaustion and deep spiritual suffering, yet she continued to encourage her sisters to serve with joy. She understood that Christian joy does not mean the absence of suffering but the presence of love and hope in the midst of it.
“Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice!.”

Her example reminds us that a smile, a word of encouragement and a cheerful act of service can bring light into another person’s darkness. Christian joy becomes a witness to the hope we have in Christ.
Saint Teresa of Calcutta showed that mysticism is not something separated from ordinary life. She encountered God through prayer and the Eucharist, and then carried that love into the streets, homes and hearts of the suffering. Her life invites us to look more carefully at the people around us, especially those we tend to overlook, avoid or find difficult to love.
PRAYER
Lord Jesus, through the example of Saint Teresa of Calcutta, teach us to hear Your call, recognise Your presence in the suffering and serve You with humility and love. Give us courage to respond when You invite us beyond our comfort, patience to remain faithful when You seem silent, and joy to bring hope to those who are hurting. Help us to see Your face in every person we meet and to perform even the smallest acts of kindness with great love. May our lives become humble instruments of Your compassion. Amen.
