“Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has passed away, behold, the new has come”
— Matthew 24:45
Many of the young pages at the royal court encountered the Christian faith through missionaries and fellow believers. Despite knowing the dangers, they embraced Christ wholeheartedly. Several were still catechumens, preparing for baptism while secretly learning the faith.
Their conversion reminds us that when the soul truly encounters Christ, a new identity begins to emerge that no earthly power can take away.
“Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind”
— Romans 12:2
The young martyrs served in the royal court of King Mwanga II, a place filled with political pressure, temptations, and fear. Yet they remained faithful while living amid power and uncertainty.
Their lives show that holiness is possible even in environments where faith is challenged and virtue is difficult.
“Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God.”
— Matthew 5:8
The martyrs refused immoral demands that violated their Christian convictions and personal dignity. Their refusal became one of the main reasons for their persecution.
Their witness teaches that purity is not merely self-denial; it is the freedom to belong completely to God.
“Whoever wishes to be great among you shall be your servant.”
— Mark 10:43
Charles Lwanga became a leader among the Christian pages after earlier leaders were killed. He encouraged the younger believers, strengthened them in prayer, and protected them during times of danger.
His example shows that true spiritual leadership strengthens others to remain faithful when trials arise.
“Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them…”
— Matthew 28:19
Knowing persecution was growing, Charles secretly baptized several catechumens at night before their arrest and execution, desiring that they receive the grace of the sacraments.

“For whoever loses his life for my sake will save it”
— Luke 9:24
The young Christians were repeatedly pressured to abandon their faith. Despite threats, imprisonment, and suffering, they remained firm in their love for Christ.

— 1 Thessalonians 5:11
The prisoners were marched for miles to Namugongo, the place of execution. Along the journey, they prayed together, sang hymns, and encouraged one another to remain strong.

“Do not fear those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul.”
— Matthew 10:28
At Namugongo, many were burned alive for refusing to abandon Christ. Even in agony, witnesses reported their courage, prayers, and peace. Charles Lwanga himself encouraged others until the very end.

— John 12:24
What began as persecution became a seed for tremendous growth. Christianity spread rapidly throughout Uganda after their deaths, and their witness inspired generations of believers.
Their sacrifice teaches us that God often brings abundant spiritual fruit from sacrifices that seem like defeat.
“Let no one despise your youth, but set the believers an example.”
— 1 Timothy 4:12
Many among the martyrs were teenagers and young adults. Their courage continues to inspire young Christians throughout the world to live boldly for Christ.
Their lives remind us that holiness is not measured by age but by the depth of one’s surrender to God.
O holy Saint Charles Lwanga and faithful companions, courageous witnesses of Christ and shining examples of youthful holiness, pray for us that we may remain faithful to God in every circumstance.
Help us to choose truth over compromise, purity over temptation, and courage over fear. Strengthen young people throughout the world, protect those who suffer for their faith, and teach us to love Christ above every earthly power.
May your witness inspire us to persevere in holiness until the end. Amen.
